My intern, Cass, brought me this lovely little aloe plant, and I wanted to paint it on a window sill to be the next in my series of Matisse Windows. This shows a scene outside the window of a Spanish villa crafted after the St. Regis in Laguna. A trail (similar in color and pattern) to the sill takes your eye from front to back, away to the ocean and 22 miles across the sea to Catalina. The Blue Bird of Happiness is visiting for a moment - a herald of the first day of spring. Following my theory of placing opposites next to each for a rhythmic effect, in composing this painting I had the curtain be Warm colors, next to it the window pane is Dark blue and Cool. Next to that is the villa, which is Light and Warm. Next is the grounds which end with Dark and Cool paired next to the left window pane which is Warm and Light with an edge of Warm and Dark. On the far left, the back wall is Cool and repeats in opposite temperature the pattern on the curtain on the right edge. This painting is an oil on linen.
