This view from the bridge has to be the most dramatic angle of the Rio Grande Gorge! I first saw it in 2000, on my original trip to Taos, and was so amazed driving up to it - you don’t see it until you are almost on it! Suddenly the flat land opens up and dives down into this valley created not by the river, but by earth movements as the two massive adolescent plates pushed and shoved past each other. As you look down, standing in the center of the bridge, it is humbling in its story of the epic tectonic battle for placement of the Pacific plate and the North American plate. About eight hundred feet beneath the bridge, the Rio Grande winds from Colorado about fifty miles southwest past Taos. The dinner plate flat mesa serenely hides the incredible inner world of the gorge, with craggy rifts and eroded cliffs. Petroglyph’s, hot springs and hidden nooks and crannies are part of the ancient ecosystem. As the sun moves and the seasons change, the lighting on the gorge is spectacular in its transformation. I wanted to capture the sun and shadow faces of the gorge, letting the warm and cool colors push/pull your eye into the vista.
