There is a little valley along the Rio Grande, that is a beautiful little farming community, I see it every year I am out in that area and always stop to take pictures and draw. I imagined this little adobe church there, snug by the river, in a grove of dancing orchards. My original drawing was done from the Southwest Chief train I rode out one year from Solana Beach, CA to Santa Fe, NM. It was an overnight train, with a full moon shining in my window all the way and I drew and watercolored at every stop and places of note in between. It’s hard for me to know for sure where this was, there was a lot of beautiful open space. So I combined several visions I had of lovely lands along the way. The name Evening Song, refers to the time of day that is so beautiful in the southwest, it feels the earth is singing goodbye to the sun as it lights up in one last golden glory. It made me think of Vespers, or Evensong. The curving circle in the sky above the mountain is my symbol for eternity, the promise the sun will return again tomorrow.
