One of the more strenuous up-hill hikes, is to the Alcove House. There are four ladders you have to climb to scale the cliff-side, 140 feet above Frijoles Canyon, but once you reach the alcove, (where the Ancestral Puebloans lived), it is an amazing view out over the valley. There is a reconstructed Kiva in there, and viga holes and niches where people used to make their homes. It causes you to ponder what it must have been like to live there in that far ago time from 1150 CE to 1550 CE. I wanted to do a picture of the climb up, and decided it needed some life. So I combined it with a photo I had taken earlier in the week of a horse. The laughing horse image came from shots of horses along the drive to Taos, who were as interested in us as we were of them! This guy was laughing at us as I scrambled around trying to get photos of him, crawling in and out of the large ditch on the side of the road between us!
