I did the sketch for this painting while in Santa Fe over Christmas. I had some wonderful reference photos to sketch from, taken by my friend Russell Oiring. I worked a whole tablet of them in my blind contour style, which means I don't look at the paper while I'm drawing - only at what I'm drawing. This means I get some wonderfully wacky drawings, with interesting distortions and fun exaggerations. I imagine this fellow has his ear out for the friendly call of one of his mates - the call of the wild! The little farm pictured is from a sketch I did of one of the orchard towns along the Rio Grande. This shows the summer with the apples growing ripe on the trees, thirstily drinking up the monsoonal rains. The mountain pictured is beautiful Taos mountain.
